Timur and the cats

Babies and cats cannot go together, or 'never leave your baby alone with your cat', etc. We heard several warnings before even Timur was born. Max, our 4 year-old cyrese (cirmos) cat is like a wild cat. He spends most of his time outside. He reacted a bit alarmed when he heard Timur's cry for the first time. Time by time he got used to the roughness and noisiness of Timur and now he is not that much annoyed any more. If Timur gets too close to him or if Timur is too rough, Max warns him with a miauw. Though Timur doesn't understand his language; as the older and wiser one, Max goes to find a safer spot in the house.

When Timur was younger, Max and him got along much better. Now Timur crawls after Max and he cannot stand it. He disappears immediately via the balcony.

Bors our siamese cat is much more tolerant and much more jealous than Max. Bors sensed around the birth that attention was reduced tremendously, and it stayed like that ever since. She replied to this by throwing herself on her back whenever someone came/comes by. (Our house was fairly busy around that time.) While I was giving birth Bors was under the warm tub. There was a little step into the tub and there was a little cosy spot under it. When Timur was born, she immediately checked him out. We always allowed her to get close to Timur, sniff at his head, nose etc. Timur got used to the presence of Borsi and now they are getting playmates. (Well, with a little bit of exaggeration.) Timur is squezing Bors, but Bors doesn't seem to be bothered by it. She tries to kick back a little, but with great care.

When Timur is on my lap, Bors would like to be there as well and when this is not possible, she is looking back with sad eyes. Or tries to settle in Mathijs' lap, or she sits next to us. She takes the competition for attention very seriously. However, she is not agressive, she never hurt Timur or anyone else. Rather she is very gentle with Timur. They sleep sometimes next to each other or Borsi sleeps at the feet of Timur under the blanket. It's getting to develop into a co-habitation that everyone seems to enjoy.
